Puppets for TV Posted by brazilnut72 on Aug 21, 2008
Does anybody here have experience in the area of filming for TV?  We are learning as we go...trial and error.  Any advice that people have with regard to lighting, sound, green screen, etc. will be most welcome.

We have a couple episodes that will go to air in the next few weeks.  When they do, I will post them here (via Youtube) to get your feedback.

PS...I looked for a thread with this topic and didn't find one.  If there is one, please point me there!

Post on this subject get mixed in with other topic threads............. I did a search but did not come up with exactly what you were wanting. To answer your question they are many here that are great with filming puppets, some have even put out DVDs. Dr.Puppet is working on a series at the moment.
Excellent idea to post your videos and all our experts can help you out. Can't wait to see them. Everyone will be along shortly.

Ok, here goes with my most pressing question of the moment:

We have been using wireless headset mics for our puppet actors.  We are now starting to film some more with live actors.  Will it work to use a boom mic for everybody, or do I still need to have my puppeteers hooked up to the headset mics?

ps. Dr. Puppet,

I LOVE your site!

Thanks! Your puppeteers need seperate mics to avoid sounding hollow. Now if you use a shotgun mic you may be able to mic two at a time but if they move to much they will go out of vocal range and sound hollow. Now you could pre-record the shows that way you won't need more than one or two mics.

I was afraid of that.  We are going to make due with what we have for the time being.  Hopefully with some creative shot work (setting up different shots and putting mics on different people for different parts of the dialogue) we can make it work.  We do a lot of taping beforehand for live performances...but it seems like it would be very complicated for film.

no not at all we pre-tape all the 99 acre woods shorts and I perform all the puppets layered together on green screen. You just have to get everyone together around the mic for a reading.

Interesting.  That deserves some real thought.  That would work for our green-screen shots, definitely.  It would also give me more chance to perform.  It might be a little harder with our outdoor shots.

true it would be harder outdoors. Now if you had a dedicated sound person you could have them under the puppeteers directing the mics.
