Puppet Green Screen Test Posted by RYMANOFSTEEL on Jan 07, 2011
I uploaded a green screen test i did with one of my blues brothers puppets. It worked with great success! Soon I will have both blues brothers in a video like this performing a song.

I've always been curious about green screen. What program do you use with one?
Re: Puppet Green Screen Test Posted by RYMANOFSTEEL on Jan 07, 2011
I use final cut pro, it's a program for mac computers. if you are on windows I hear that sony's vegas pro works well. all of the videos on my youtube page that have been green screen edited were done in final cut pro

Looks good. You know he looks kind of dwarfed by his surroundings since he is just alone.  I really have not worked with green screen and it made me wonder how you best control that.  Is it in the original shot and how close the camera is to the puppet?  I would assume that the program could "enlarge" the puppet in the screen, but if you do that would you lose some quality?  If it camera location is important, how would one go about calculating that for multiple shots with different puppets that would be combined later?

Just some of the questions that popped into my head while I watched your test.

actually i made him smaller on purpose, by 50%. the plan is to have him on screen with the other blues brother. So i wanted to make room for him later in the shot. I will probably end up shrinking both by only 25% so that they don't look too small.
these videos here show some green screen work with different puppets at 100% size

So actually when filming it might be best to frame the puppet really tight?  I may be thinking about this wrong.  I am going from my experience with image manipulation.  With an image you can normally shrink it down and the quality is still good but when you try to enlarge it beyond what the original size was it tends to get fuzzy. Now with the age of digital video that may not be as important.

when i shot it, he was framed pretty tight. then when i shrunk the image i captured and put ut in front of a normal sized backdrop it made the scene look bigger and him smaller. in the video the puppet is at 50% size, so if i left him at 100% he would take up more of the screen, but i wanted to leave room for other puppets to fill in later. Since i am filming it on minidv tape i wouldn't want to enlarge it because i would lose quality. i will be posting some new videos like that one within the next week or so
