I fixed the link.  It should work now.  I just purchased the same foam from Joann's today at their 1/2 price three day sale.  It came to $2.99 a yard.  Sale ends tomorrow.

I live two miles from The Foam Factory Michigan. I have gotten samples from them in the past and will go there in person when I need to buy more foam.  Check them out at www.foambymail.com

Do you buy the blue/green foam at Joanns?  I do not care for it, but I use it some. I liked what Hancocks used to carry before they switched brands (and doubled the price). I preferred Academy, but they quit carrying it. I do buy it at Hobby Lobby.
There is a foam store in downtown Houston, and one off loop 610 and 290 (around 43rd street) that has all types of foam. Their prices are good. The cheapest (1" thick) is not good, too flimsy. The drawback is they want to sell it to you one day and have you pick it up a few days later. At the price of gas, I cannot see making two round trips of almost 100 miles each. I also like to see and feel the foam, and they did not have samples of everything. I got the impression that you are supposed to know what you want when you get there! LOL.

Someday, I'll be able to invest in more professional supplies, but in the meantime, I like finding bargains to practice on (should I mention the eight 18 gallon totes I have collected of fabric this past year from clearance, remnants, and second-hand stores?  ) Anyway, the other day I found a kid's nap mat for 75 cents at a thrift store.

I suspect that the previous owner gave up on the idea of having their child nap - the mat was full of holes from someone jabbing a pencil into it - but now it will serve a new purpose. I cut off the covering, giving me four 12" x 20" x 1" foam pieces, of admittedly unknown density / quality, but suitable for practice (and no sign of the pencil punctures after washing  )

Does anyone know somewhere in New York?
Re: Where do you find foam in your area? Posted by Jon on Mar 31, 2008
Depends on what part of New York.  If you live in the Albany you can go to Albany Foam.  They supply upholsterers and can get you just about any foam you want.  I assume there are other suppliers in other major Metro areas like Rochester, Syracuse and of course NYC.   JoAnn Fabrics carries polyurethane foam in several different thicknesses and you can thind their stores all over the state..

Hi all

I am new to the world of puppet building and I am looking to build my first puppet!

I'm from the UK and was wondering if anyone can recommend anyplace for me to purchase foam from over here and if anyone can recommend any foam that is particularly forgiving for first time puppet makers?

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.
