Paper Puppet Theater Posted by Nikole H. on Jun 19, 2009
I have created a new name for myself with my puppets. I've turned on to a new medium. I am in LOVE with paper. I had so many scrapbook papers but hate doing scrapbooking so I use it now to make puppets. I'm calling myself, Paper Puppet Theater, and will volunteer my shows with Harrison's school starting in the fall. I also like that paper is cheap and shows the kids that you can make puppets out of ANYTHING and doesn't have to cost a lot to make something pretty. I also came across beautiful Japanese crepe paper that I just can't live without. I use it for EVERYTHING. It is unlike any that I have used in the past. It is the same crepe paper that they use to make those beautiful Japanese paper dolls. I have every color that they make and the best part is....it is so affordable here in Singapore. Here is one example that I have made from it using styrofoam as my base. It is a VERY simple rod puppet with just an up and down and side to side head movement. I always like to omit arms. I'm weird like that. So he is finished and sitting nicely on my display shelf. He is a groundhog that was created for this past groundhog day for a friend of mine but he was so cute that I decided to keep him....lol. I made a carnival mask for my friend instead. She was happy with it. I like to see how far I can push such a simple medium.
Here are two pictures of my groundhog:
I'm working on a show right now based from the book, Strega Nona as my first all paper puppet show. It's a lot of fun and I'm doing it all in miniature form. I'll be sure to show and tell as I get further. I have two puppets almost completed now and will be moving onto the tiny stage.
Glad to be back in the puppet world!
Aloha,
Nikole

How cool! The ground hog looks a bit like a pinata since you cut the tissue in strips for his fur. Very creative Nikole. I am so glad that you are back with us and making puppets again.

I knew you could not stay away from puppet building for long. Hope you can share some of the styles of puppetry where you live. I love the Ground Hog.

Always love your work Nikole, the little fellow is fantastic. I reckon the kids are going to love these creations. Who wouldn't, your company name Paper Puppet Theater is really cool. I'm currently making up a paper puppet theater for my preschool library show end of session craft.
I'm not that flash at spelling but in Australia we have to spell it Theatre caught me out I had to go back and change it as I had the US version originally.
Here's a link to the plans, I haven't made up the accompanying video yet as I haven't had time. Feel free to make up your own version for Harrison's gang.

Thanks everyone. Yes, I couldn't stay away from puppetry as it is my heart. It's good to be back here on Puppets and Stuff. I've really missed all of you.
Henry...FANTASTIC! Really...great job!
Yes, I giggle at my mini pinata puppets all the time. Too bad mine aren't filled with candy. I'll tell the kids that anyways...lol.
